Lyrics to Overgrown in order.

1. PRESERVED LAND

Fire smoke seeped in my clothes and I'm whistling a tune that noone knows,

the radio says it's getting worse,

my left knee is guiding the wheel and the happiness is too hard to conceal,

but the radio tells me I shouldn't smile

.

There's no need for making plans,

we'll be wasting afternoons on preserved land

Someone said that age is a state of mind,

and that someone must've been a friend of mine

.

Leather seats stick to your legs and I want you bad but I will not beg,

September's a separate world away,

gardens of green and flashes of flesh I'll cling to this moment till nothing is left,

that old oak tree was sworn to secrecy,

there's nobody here moving cept you and me

.

Your wish is my command,

while we're wasted in the weeds on preserved land,

and if you tell me age is a state of mind,

I'll probably say you are a friend of mine

.

The city shines a bit too bright, you look your best in the natural light,

waking with your blood and conscience clear,

and I can't say there won't be pain but the birds still fly through the pouring rain,

so take your lumps and keep on keepin on,

and speak highly of me after I'm gone

.

And barefoot's the best way you can go,

all the people in their shiny shoes don't know,

someone said that age is a state of mind,

and that type of state non highway map can find.

2. DOIN' ALRIGHT

I am not happy, but I'm not sad,

I can't say I'm angry, but I'm not exactly glad

and I never gave you anything except all I ever had,

I guess I'm doin' alright

.

& I am not a rich man, but I'm not broke,

I'm not shooting death stares, but I'm not cracking jokes,

I don't need no intervention but sometimes I bum a smoke.

I guess I'm doin' alright

.

Everyone I know is either high or low it seems,

I try to give and take and end up somewhere in between,

my mind might be messy but my intentions are clean,

cause there's a difference between daydreamers and people chasing dreams

.

I am the mediator for my head and my heart,

I'm not nearly finished, but I'm so far from the start,

and I don't know what my role is I just know I'll play my part,

I guess I'm doin' alright

Oh I guess........I'm Doin' Alright

3. FAINT OF HEART

I never said I neeeded millions, I admit I got a dream,

I can't wear no shirt & tie despite how trivial that seems,

now I'm racing betewen the weekends,

got not time can't watch it fly,

but I got my sights on something, I plan to do a little living before I die

.

And I know I've been walking on the edge,

and if so you can go maybe I'll meet you up on ahead,

there was a chance this might get messy,

we knew that from the start,

cause chasing down a vision isn't for the faint of heart

.

I drifted away so fast I could hardly see the shore,

I don't need no god damn savior it's my issue to ignore,

as soon as your done lecturing can you tell me when you're through,

all I wants the gold and the holy grail and never to be anything like you

.

Now the balance is a'swayin, and the cathloics all are praying,

and the years they are receding, and the receipts are conceding

that I'm done,

they're reading insufficient funds

.

Don't give me your sad eyes I can see you're insecure,

we've been dead for so damn long now I can't shoo these flies no more,

of course I got a history and you got your demons too,

should've left that all behind us that's what normal people do,

but you're stuck inside your still frame, you've become a photograph,

I should stick you in an album cause you're living in the past,

if we're not moving forward then we're moving apart,

and if it's finally over can I confiscate my heart

.

Cause you knew my profression,

so spare me your objections,

and I got a confession......I would do it all again.

.

And I know I've been walking on the edge,

and if so you can always go and I'll meet you up on ahead,

there was a chance this might get messy,

we knew that from the start,

cause chasing down a vision isn't for the faint of heart

4. DEAR YOUNGER ME

Dear younger me, you look better than I do,

but I'm so much wiser, so much shit that I've been through,

and I apologize, this letter's overdue

.

I read that true genius is wisdom and youth,

and realizing passing time's the only truth,

heed the warning in my words, I'm living proof.

.

With spring between your ears but winter at your feet,

flashes in memories become your sole retreat,

life's not a sunday drive, but it is a one way street

.

And all I know, is we can't go, back again,

and one day, all we'll say, is "Remember when?"

till then....

.

As for love, you're gonna find out soon enough,

if you're on a battleground and the price is way too much,

sometimes the wise give their goodbyes, when the times are rough,

.

but love like love's water and you're stuck on dry land,

and what you give you should get back hand in hand,

it might seem complicated now, one day you'll understand

.

and forget money, it's just paper anyway,

you'll make it they'll take it, that's all I gotta say,

just worry how you spend your time, not how you spend your pay

.

cause all I know is we can't go back again,

and one day, all we'll say, is "remember when?"

.

So younger me, figure out what you want,

and once you do pursue it non non-chalant,

I know this all seems easier said than done,

but this what I wish I'd known when I'd begun,

so follow your heart, read the signs, take the cue,

don't be no follower, but for god's sake follow through,

you'll be a stranger to regret,

sincerely,

older you

5. SPRING STREET

These antique street lights decorate the dead night,

and even at it's height, spring street was dying

walking down after school, with my mamma's boy rules,

I don't know if we're cool, but we're trying

.

the mean mugs by the doors,

slowly strangles the stores,

I swear the man swore with such feeling

.

I can still hear the sound,

when those church bells would pound,

there are ghosts in this town,

and I'm one of them

.

in my mind there's a picture

the way things should've been,

what remains are the stains of the days that came since then

.

all my mom and pop dreams,

they won't float in this stream,

nothing's what it seems when your sixteen,

when your sixteen.

.

many moons came and went,

now those stores are for rent,

we never wasted time spent,

down on spring street.

6. INTERMITTENT RAIN

Grey skies in the morning and they stay there all day,

the ground shifts without warning but you still decide to stay,

you had something that you had to do, but forget what it was,

your senses pull you through to the land of because

.

caught between your childhood dream and your full grown nightmare,

reach for the line you need not find what's lurking over there,

the tracks they are a shaking, but you cannot see the train,

you're stuck in the middle, the ancient riddle of intermittent rain

.

the wipers scrape you can't escape, your visions not content,

your speaking clear, so it appears, but they know not what you meant,

hit the brakes for pete's sake, but you don't know no pete,

and they don't work and it's gonna hurt, better try and use your feet

.

the trust can bend and pretend just don't let it break,

midnight dreams can make you scream when you are still awake,

with a pen, now and again, you enter written pain,

quick and slow with no control like intermittent rain

.

sandwiched in you cannot win when you're not right or wrong,

noone can shout or kick you out when you do not belong,

right and left, up and down, it makes no differnce to me,

when you're up you fall, when you're down you crawl,

you can't turn away when you can't see,

and you can't even see

.

try as you might, you'll loose this fight,

though with the sky you plead,

drizzle or pour, we're never sure,

so just adjust the speed,

in blurred times watch yellow lines

and you will sustain,

the rythms ride when caught inside,

intermitten rain.

7. GRADUATION DAY (intro)

no lyrics (protest chant)

_____________________________________

8. GRADUATION DAY

my high school diplomas somewhere buried in a box,

my college degree put me in a hole,

on my graduation day I had to marry sallie mae,

with an interest rate that suffocates my soul

.

nowadays the want ads are a waste land,

theres too many people, theres too little jobs,

officer we need a full investiagation,

cause along the way the usa got robbed

.

i went out and got myself a proper haircut,

i invested in a fancy shirt and tie,

but I'm afraid my resume has never seen the light of day,

its in a pile where the promise goes to die

.

my high school diplomas somewhere buried in a box,

my college degree put me in a hole,

on my graduation day I had to marry sallie mae,

with an interest rate that suffocates my soul

.

i drove into a wall of contradiction,

instead of who you are its who ya know,

and theres experience required,

so it seems I can't get hired,

my experience is that the system blows

.

now I'm standing on a line called unemployement

cause I took the path that I was told to take,

yet the goverment bails out these crooked bankers,

while the rest of us can never catch a break

.

long gone are the days of the forefathers,

with liberty and justice for all,

looking back maybe it was always an illusion,

just like the wizard shouting out behind the wall

.

I know some people way too old to be living in their parents homes,

but they cant afford a place of their own,

me I'm living paycheck to paycheck, I got bills that I ain't paid yet,

I'm just hoping I can make it through the new year,

if that is the promised land then someone broke a promise man,

if it is the promised land,

if that is the promised land then someone broke a promise man,

if it is the promised land

.

I can hear that train a comin,

can't you hear the footsteps drummin,

there's voices rising in the midst,

people shouting cause they're pissed,

empy hands become clenched fists,

and for change to exists it starts like this.

9. YESTERDAY'S NEWS

Walking down the roadside I got stones inside my shoes,

hitch hiking walking backyards heading towards yesterdays news

a natural distaster might be happening today,

so I'm waiting for the shaking, it's not natural this way

.

I keep looking up to catch the ceiling caving in,

and I'm missing all my chances I don't know what coulda been,

it coulda been a ghost passing caused the dog to bark,

my imagination loves to take excursions in the dark.

.

and another day rolls on,

another night trades places with the dawn,

maybe I think too much,

maybe I'm outta touch,

or maybe everyones insane

.

I want an explanation for the things I can't explain,

someone give me insight, what goes on in peoples brains?

I'm tired of the moping, tired of hoping for the best,

it seems nothings quite as heavy as the weight of empitness

.

and when it all comes crashing down,

I'll make my way to higher ground,

and I'll take one last look around,

and wonder....where we all went wrong.

.

like christopher columbus I'm in search of some new land,

cause the spot I'm at is infested with the poisonous greed of man,

magellan was a prophet too, his philosophy turned fact,

all the prideful politicians warped the world and made it flat..

.

and another day rolls on,

another night trades places with the dawn,

maybe I think too much,

maybe I'm outta touch,

or maybe everyone,  maybe everyone,

I know that everyone must be insane

10. THE RECIPE

It still amazes me, how many fools I see,

claiming the found love at first sight

well it its really true, theres something they can do,

to make sure the fire stays bright

.

Theres a recipe, I guarantee,

can help them keep the love in their life,

its one part making love, one part making up,

the others never make her your wife

.

Now you're out having fun, thinking you found the one,

well let me pass some wisdom to you,

she's got a basket spun, don't put all your eggs in one,

you can have some cake and take a bite too

.

theres a whole lotta fish out in that great big bowl,

its natural to catch a few,

one thing to consider when your dropping your pole,

someone might be fishing you

.

when we first met me dear, I was so insincere,

I didn't have the ending in sight,

now I do realize, even the fireflies must adjust

to the daylight.

.

so now my recipe, it guarantees I'll always have

that love in my life

its one part making love, one part making up

and the others make a good girl your wife

11. IF THE STARS ALIGN

Maybe its the glow of the fireflies tonight

or the pattern of the breeze making the degrees just right,

I'm not saying that I love you I just love how the moonlight

has cast you as lead on its stage

.

and you're so concerned with getting a good nights sleep,

but theres a rhythm in the dark that alone I cannot keep,

someone should paint a portrait of your clothes there in a heap,

cause I'd hang it forever on my wall

.

just hold me like you mean it, pretend that your mine,

who knows, one day we might really be together,

if the stars align

.

any fool can be happy, it takes courage to hurt,

I am wading near the window, you're swimming in my shirt,

pretty soon the morning flowers will wake up in the dirt,

they know seasons change all too well

.

and you say our souls met in another life,

you know I don't believe in that but who knows you could be right,

either way I'll be leaving with the morning light

and I hope you find what your looking for

12. WAYS THE DICE CAN FALL

Summer, she's a wild one, she'll kiss then turn away,

and like the leaves in autumn's arms I never

fall half way.

.

My big day it came & went,

doomed to be past tense,

the makeup and the money we used,

never did make that much sense

.

but when I look in your blue eyes,

it's not hard to see,

if something makes your smile that wide,

then it means the world to me.

.

there are faces that got lost along the way,

and I know they'd trade tomorrow for today,

there's a bright side and a shadow on every man made wall,

and I guess I fell in favor of the ways the dice can fall

.

my mind filled with mixed emotion

the first time I mowed that lawn,

another milestone memory,

another year that you'd been gone

.

some teenage kid cut through my yard,

my instinct was to yell,

but a lifetime ago that was me,

so I figured "what the hell"

.

the windows meet the morning sun,

theres a calmness in the air,

a universal understanding that's so peaceful & rare

.

there are faces that got lost along the way,

and I know they'd trade tomorrow for today,

there's a bright side and a shadow on every man made wall,

and I guess I fell in favor of the ways the dice can fall

13. WORK IN PROGRESS

I been around the block enough to know,

when the feelings gone the bloods pumping slow,

and nothings pointless, just some points are dull.

.

safe to say I'm set in my ways,

I can sit in one spot, I can run for days,

I contradict myself and I stick to what I say.

.

I said I'd never need more than this,

I didn't expect a metamorphisis.

I was standing on the ledge when it all went down

.

I am not what I was before,

nothing stays the same, baby that's for sure,

I am on a journey somewhere,

that I may never get,

I'm a piece of work.........in progress.

.

Everywhere I look I find a choice between money and time,

you gotta live with yours, and I'll fly with mine

.

I'm moving fast to say the least,

cause with wasted days I just can't make peace,

I have seen the future and it's underground

.

I am not what I was before,

nothing stays the same, baby that's for sure,

I am on a journey somewhere,

that I may never get,

I'm a piece of work..

.

Distant places in my head,

Dismissed dreams that screamed and fled,

they're always out of sight and never out of mind

.

I don't know what I'm anxious for,

since there's babies being born dirt poor,

if they can make it through,

I can make it to,

I can make it to.

.

I am not what I was before,

nothing stays the same, I know that's for sure,

I am on a journey somewhere,

that I may never get,

I'm a piece of work.

You're a piece of work.

We're a piece of work.....in progress.

14. HARD TIMES

Batten down the hatches,

gather up whats not nailed down,

there's a storm brewing somewhere out at sea

don't be the one to end up lost and never found,

don't go kill the cat with curiosity.

.

All these indie songs that noones ever heard,

the painting in the sky thats in clear view,

send out a warning, tell em not to look that way,

that way that's exactly what they all will do.

.

Ain't no leader out there with a magic wand,

if a ship is sinking it can't turn around,

and as the adage goes, if you want a rose,

you gotta let the seed soak in the ground.

.

These are hard times, that's what we're all saying,

but from where I'm sitting man, times are good.

Yes, I see the branches on the trees are swaying,

but the trunk is standing where its always stood.

Knock on wood.

.

Numbers rise and fall like dynasties and swords,

if you're thinking lifes not fair, you're not the first

Eventually everyone breaks bread with sorrow,

always know somebody out theres got if worse.

.

No newspapers gonna tell me how to feel,

No money gonna rain on my parade,

My daddy showed me that this life

is one and only, I'll be damned if I go through it afraid.

I won't go it afraid.

.

And I won't back down.

And I can't stop now.

And I won't back down.

And I can't stop now.

.

Cause these are hard times, that's what we're all saying,

but from where I'm sitting man, times are good.

Yes, I've seen the branches on the trees are swaying,

but the trunk is standing where it's always stood.

Where it's always stood.

Better knock on wood.
